Momentum is a 3D planar electromagnetic (EM) simulator that accepts arbitrary design geometries, including multi-layer structures, and accurately simulates complex EM effects such as coupling and parasitics. Fully integrated into both the Advanced Design System (ADS) and RF Design Environment (RFDE) software packages, Agilent's EM solver helps designers accurately characterize and improve passive circuit performance.

Momentum offers many new additions and enhancements that allow significantly improved capacity, accuracy and speed for the design and verification of passive components and interconnects for RFIC, MMIC, and PCB/hybrid/module design.

The new 64-bit version of the Momentum 3D-planar EM simulator is available on Sun Solaris and AMD/Linux RedHat WS v.3.0, and it solves the capacity issue associated with large design and verification jobs by removing the memory limitations inherent with 32-bit applications.

In the past, 3D-planar EM simulators were only available for 32-bit processing, such as is available in personal computers. 32-bit computers are limited to up to a few gigabytes of memory, which also limits the size and complexity of problems that can be solved on them. Designers were often faced with simplifying their designs to stay within memory limitations, thus sacrificing results accuracy.

The new 64-bit capability eliminates memory limitations and cuts EM simulation and verification time in half. This is especially valuable when it comes to the design and verification of large interconnect, package and antenna-array structures.

New Iterative Solver

Momentum now hosts three unique solvers to address the varying degrees of EM modeling complexity and extend EM modeling efficiencies across a much wider application coverage area. With the addition of a new Krylov iterative solver, large design and verification jobs get done in a fraction of the time compared to a direct solver.

Improved Thick Conductor Modeling

A major enhancement to Momentum 3D-Planar EM modeling is the addition of horizontal current modeling on the metal interconnects sidewalls as well as the vertical currents. This in turn provides full current modeling on all four sides of thick metal conductors, hence increasing EM modeling accuracy while no longer requiring the compute intensive edge-mesh option to be turned on.

Improved Thin Layers Modeling

The Momentum modeling engine has been further improved to better handle thin substrate layers often found in Si based process technologies. This in turn provides Momentum users with a more robust software that result in 2x simulation speed improvements of critical integrated components such as spiral inductors and MIM capacitors.

Faster EM Simulations

With all these added new techniques and enhancements, Momentum users will experience a more robust 3D-Planar EM modeling experience, and in certain cases see speed-ups of up to 10x from previous versions.
