RF System Budget Analysis provides an RF system analysis solution in the ADS Analog/RF Environment.

RF System engineers can now analyze system chain measurements including IP3, P1-dB Compression, and similar values, early in the development cycle.

Unlike analyses that use spreadsheets, budget analysis in ADS is done in the circuit design environment itself. This makes it easier for circuit and system engineers to work together in the same environment. Predictions are also more accurate because circuit components are used directly in the budget analysis.

Budget Analysis Application Guide

The Budget Analysis Application Guide is a collection of examples demonstrating the use of Advanced Design System (ADS) to perform budget analysis on a typical RF system chain.

These examples include performing the budget analysis on 2-port cascades, multi-port topologies and analysis of mixer spurious response.

The Budget Analysis Application Guide can be installed from the Agilent EEsof EDA Knowledge Center. Once installed, it is accessed from the schematic page under the DesignGuide menu.

RF System Budget Analysis

Advanced Design System offers two different RF system budget analysis solutions:

RF Budget Analysis

More than forty built-in measurements are available in the budget controller for single-ended analysis of cascaded two-port networks with 50 ohm single tone source and termination. Even though the components in the top-level are two-port two-pin components, the user-defined subnetworks can have multi-pin components. Click on the following link for a complete list of measurements available:

The system designer can perform measurements such as signal-to-noise ratio, noise figure, and other measurements, both for simple 2-port cascaded systems and for complex systems including AGC loops. Budget controller supports most 2-port components and few multi-port components in ADS library. The simulator indicates with an error message if an unsupported component is used for budget analysis. Please refer the user documentation for the category of components supported.

Pre-configured data display templates are available for every measurement, which includes the measurements in the form of tables and plots. There is also an option to export results in ASCII file format for use with tools like Excel Spreadsheet.

RF Budget Measurement Equations

This solution allows the RF system design engineer to analyze measurements in flexible circuit topologies. Fourteen AEL measurement templates are available to perform the budget measurements.

To perform RF System Budget Analysis, the user requires a license either for the Harmonic Balance Simulator (E8882) or RF System Simulator (E8853).
